The Fourth of July is nearly upon us. In addition to swimming and sunning, I plan on taking my family to watch the grandest of all Fourth of July traditions, a fireworks display. There’s nothing wrong with getting your Fourth of July kicks by setting off a few fireworks yourself, but make sure that you stay on the right side of the law.
Below is a list of cities in the metro and their rules on fireworks:
- Belton – Fireworks are allowed June 28-July 3 from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and until midnight on the Fourth.
- Blue Springs – Fireworks are allowed from July 1-3 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. and until midnight on the Fourth.
- De Soto – No fireworks allowed.
- Gladstone – No fireworks allowed.
- Grandview – No fireworks allowed.
- Independence – Fireworks are allowed from July 3-5 from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. and until midnight on the Fourth. Children under 16 must be supervised.
- Kansas City, Kansas – Fireworks other than bottle rockets, missiles and sky lanterns are permitted 9 a.m. – 11 p.m. on July 2-4.
- Kansas City, Missouri – No fireworks allowed.
- Lawrence – Only party poppers, snappers, snakes, toy caps, sparklers and smoke bombs are permitted.
- Leavenworth – Only devices like sparklers and smoke bombs are permitted.
- Lee’s Summit – Fireworks are allowed from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. on July 2-3 and until midnight on the Fourth. A permit is necessary, which can be obtained from licensed vendors in the city or from City Hall.
- Lenexa – Only devices like smoke bombs, sparklers, snappers and paper caps are permitted.
- Liberty – Non-aerial fireworks are allowed between 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. on July 3-4.
- Merriam – No fireworks allowed.
- Mission – Only sparklers are permitted.
- Mission Hills – Sparklers, flower pots, fountains, colored fire cones and boxes, snakes and caps can be set off only on July 3-4.
- Olathe – No fireworks allowed.
- Overland Park – Only snappers are permitted.
- Parkville – Fireworks that stay on the ground are permitted from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. on July 1-3 and 5, and from 10 a.m. until midnight on the Fourth.
- Prairie Village – No fireworks allowed.
- Raytown – Fireworks are allowed from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. on July 4. A permit is necessary, which can be obtained from a licensed vendor in the city or from City Hall. Bottle rockets, roman candles and sky lanterns are prohibited.
- Riverside – Fireworks are allowed from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. from June 26 – July 2, 10 a.m. until midnight on July 3-4 and 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. July 6.
- Shawnee – Only caps and snakes are permitted.
- Spring Hill – Fireworks are allowed from 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. from June 28 – July 5.
