Magruder Report: Prairie Village Restrictions Limit Freedoms on Personal Property

Magruder Report February 11, 2015

Recently, a resident of Prairie Village sent an anonymous letter to a neighbor complaining about a recreational vehicle parked in the neighbor’s driveway. The recipients of the letter did not in fact have a recreational vehicle in their driveway and reported the incident to local media outlets.

Interestingly, the writer indicated that while a recreational vehicle would be appropriate in certain areas of the Kansas City metropolitan area, it was definitely not appropriate in Prairie Village.

This argument, that certain things are only appropriate in certain neighborhoods, has also been the basis of complaints being made about a homeowner raising chickens in the backyard. In response to these types of complaints, local municipalities have been quick to respond by modifying, amending or limiting the ability of the citizens to do certain things on their properties. Some municipalities have even strictly prohibited certain animal husbandry practices, including limits on the number of cats or dogs a person may have. If you are interested in raising chickens or goats or elephants or parking a recreational vehicle in your driveway, be sure and check with your city about the prohibitions that are in place regarding your desire to have fresh eggs in the morning or a scenic weekend trip in your RV. Take particular care if you wish to plant a vineyard in your front yard. Your Big Brother may not be so neighborly.
