Smile, You’re On Candid Traffic Cam: Traffic Cameras & KC Law

Most of you may know that Kansas City, Mo. has suspended its program to issue tickets from red light traffic cameras due to constitutional challenges that are now pending before the Missouri Supreme Court. If you have a received a camera red light ticket you may either pay it ($100) or appear in court and the ticket will be dismissed.

Big Brother is still watching you, however. The cameras are still hooked up. They just aren’t programmed to catch folks running the lights. That may change if you are involved in an accident where the Kansas City police can verify a red light was run and who was driving. Cameras at intersections elsewhere may be for traffic control purposes only. For instance in Prairie Village the cameras merely tell the stoplight when traffic is present control the light cycle.
